In 2013, the South Carolina State Child Care Administrator’s Office at the Division of Early Care and Education in the SC Department of Social Services (SCDSS) authorized and funded the revision of the Infant-Toddler Guidelines and the Good Start, Grow Smart Early Learning Standards. That effort led to the creation of the South Carolina Early Learning Standards (SC- ELS)—a single document that describes children’s development and learning from birth to age five. South Carolina faces many issues. One makes all the others harder to solve. More than half the state’s pregnancies are unintended -costing children their wellbeing and families their stability. As an ambassador of this program, Berkeley County First Steps is happy to participate in outreach events, or provide presentations to community programs, to shape a culture where all pregnancies are intended, and women and men have equitable access to contraceptive care.
