Advocate

At Berkeley County First Steps we partner with community stakeholders to educate on best practices in early education and care.  Join us as we work to increase awareness and mobilize communities on behalf of young children and families!

Berkeley County First Steps works with Local Government Officials to increase awareness of Early Education and Care needs in the community.

Week Of The Young Child in Berkeley County involved an advocacy and awareness campaign that tied into the NAEYC (National Association for Education the Young Child) Week of the Young Child celebration which is a national observance during the week is April 6-12. The purpose of the Week of the Young Child was to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Berkeley County First Steps Staff worked with stakeholders in local government to acknowledge the Week of the Young Child through a mayoral proclamation. We were thrilled to have all the Mayors in Berkeley County agree to release this proclamation and in some instances host a young child as an honorary mayor during City Council Meetings during the month of April.  Our thanks to the following Mayor’s for their support:

Mayor Blackwell, Mayor Heitztler, Mayor Peagler, Mayor Pipkin, and Mayor Wrenn

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month-Did you catch us on the radio?

As you drive through Jamestown and other regions of Berkeley County, don’t be surprised to see our Pinwheels For Child Abuse Prevention visible in front of the local town hall or at various child care centers.

We hit the airways to talk about healthy child development and our programs as part of our awareness campaign in April. Delores Rock, PAT, Lead Educator was a guest on WTUA, Talk Radio, which is hosted by Representative Joe Jefferson. Adrienne Troy-Frazier was on Family Radio, hosted by Neil Gandara.
