Berkeley County First Steps program receives Walmart Community Grant for 2nd Annual Early Childhood Diaper Derby and Youth Dash

Berkeley County First Steps has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Walmart Community Grant program to host the 2nd Annual Early Childhood Diaper Derby, Youth Dash and Family Wellness festival on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Berkeley Intermediate School.

Parents with children five years old and younger who attend the free event will have the opportunity to participate in a free activities such as running and family Zumba, designed to promote and encourage physical exercise.  This event will bring together more than 20 community health and wellness organizations and provide information and supports to countless families.
“Berkeley County First Steps is proud to partner with Walmart as we work to strengthen and improve the health and wellness of Berkeley County children and families. We are grateful to Walmart for this investment in early childhood”, said Adrienne Troy-Frazier, Executive Director of Berkeley County First Steps.

On-site registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the Dash will begin at 10:00a.m. Parents are encouraged to pre-register online at https://2ndannualberkeleycountyyouthdashfestival.eventbrite.com. On the day of the event, the first 150 families to enter the event will receive a free gift.  Live entertainment, amusements, and health and wellness resources will be offered. Head Start program receives Cooper River Bridge Run Fund Grant

Berkeley County First Steps and Berkeley-Dorchester Head Start program receives Cooper River Bridge Run Fund Grant for 2nd Annual Early Childhood Diaper Derby and Youth Dash

Berkeley County First Steps and the Berkeley – Dorchester Head Start programs were jointly awarded a $1,000 grant by The Cooper River Bridge Fund to host the 2nd Annual Early Childhood Diaper Derby, Youth Dash and Family and p the Berkeley County Youth Dash on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Berkeley Intermediate School.

Parents with children five years old and younger who attend the event will have the opportunity to participate in a free Diaper Derby, a Wellness Festival and the Dash itself. During the Dash, children will crawl, wobble, walk or run along a short course to promote healthy lifestyles and regular exercise regimens and all participants will receive awards.
Adrienne Troy-Frazier, Berkeley First Steps Executive Director, said, “We are concerned about the growing problem of childhood obesity and the lack of exercise in the lives of young children. We can reverse this trend with parent education and local resources that make daily physical exercise and healthy eating more accessible and fun.”
